Defendo is a self defense system which is built on principles developed by William Ewart Fairbairn (1885-1960).  Mr. Fairbairn developed a system for use by the police and later also a close fighting system for the military.

Mr. Fairbairn called his system Defend-U. Following Mr. Fairbairn’s death his system has been modernized to today’s Defendo by the International Defendo Federation. Today Defendo is reality based and is a realistic self defense system which has been developed in order to handle today’s violent criminals.

Here Defendo is based on simple techniques which are easy to learn and which work in the real world. Defendo’s outfight is based on boxing techniques. If you have solid boxing knowledge, you have a good basis for the outfight in Defendo.

The system reckons that most conflicts have an 80/20% use of upper body/legs. Through several studies Defendo has settled on a philosophy that most conflicts end with the body in a clinch. Therefore the clinch is sort of the heart of the system. That means that you train systematically so to end the conflict from a clinch position.

Briefly you can say “Jam-distraction/pain/technique”. Many conflicts also end on the ground, therefore Defendo has a well developed program of how to get out of this situation.

The techniques of this system often have a red thread, which means you often use the same principles in outfight/clinch/ground in order to recognize and use the same techniques from different positions. You also practice various types of “weapon disarming”.
